How French brands use advertising and visual design to create recognizable identities.

About French by Design

French by Design examines how French companies use advertising and visual communication to build recognizable identities. France is strongly linked to fashion, beauty, art, travel, and design. These links, however, are not generated solely by products. Brands generate recognizable identities using logos, typefaces, packaging, images, slogans, and advertising campaigns.

I started this blog to look at some of the visual choices behind well-known French brands and consider why they remain memorable over time and across cultures and generations. Each entry will examine a separate example — beauty, fashion, transportation, and luxury. Rather than merely giving the history of each company, I am interested in how design communicates concepts. I want to investigate how simple visual decisions can represent concepts for consumers worldwide, such as confidence, elegance, creativity, luxury, or innovation.
